Obituary

Hazel Irene Wilds Walker, aged 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior and her beloved husband Jim on 11/28/2017. Hazel was born in Newport, TN on 8/16/1928 to Judson & Blanche Wilds.

She was the youngest of 6 children-siblings Bernhard, Gladys, Fain, Doris and Audrey.Hazel earned her BA in education from ETSU and subsequently earned her Library Science degree. She belonged to Phi Alpha Sorority. She had a long career teaching English and library science. She was the first librarian at William Blount High School and retired from Blount County School System in 1991. She enjoyed her students and sharing her love of language and reading with them. On 12/28/1951, Hazel married the love of her life, James Hanna Walker and moved to Blount County to the family farm to make a life with him. As a new bride, she joined Kagley’s Chapel Baptist Church where she has served as a faithful member for 66 years, as a Sunday school & VBS teacher, WMU director, choir member and in many other capacities. She loved her church family and sought to show God’s love to all she met. Four grandchildren and four great grandchildren were the light of Hazel’s life. She enjoyed spending time with them whenever possible. No one could ever ask for a better Nana!

Hazel is survived by her sister Audrey Weeks (Jim), son Lloyd Walker (Mary), daughter Brenda McHorney (Speedy); grandchildren: Rachel Walker Best (Travis), Lauren McHorney Kadish (Chris), Wesley Walker (Mayme), Jordan McHorney Dierstein (Steve); great grandchildren: Elijah, Noah and Hannah Pearl Best and Connor Kadish.
