Obituary

Hertha Maria Haberlander Pflanze, age 90, of Upper St. Clair, PA, died Friday, January 27, 2017. She was born in Windischeschenbach, Bavaria, Germany, on 6-28-1926. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Otto P. Pflanze, sister Edith and parents Ernst and Else Haberlander of San Diego, California.

She is survived by her children, Stephen, Charles, Katrine and grandchildren, Roger, Fred and son in-law, Graham Hatfull.

She immigrated with her family to the U.S. in August of 1932. Raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, she met her husband in Vermont. She held a B.A. in German literature (Barnard College), a B.S. in Education (University of Minnesota), and an M.A. in Special Education (University of St. Thomas). An accomplished and passionate teacher, her devotion to the individual needs of numerous students in Southern Indiana school districts resulted in their success. As a heritage speaker of German who was also proficient in French, she had a deep appreciation for literature, the visual arts, opera, and classical music. She enjoyed family ski trips, gardening, movies, visiting relatives in Germany, and was an avid Democrat. She moved to Pittsburgh in July 2007 to be near family. She passed away peacefully with family and caregivers present. Hertha was a loving and steadfast wife, mother, and friend, who is missed by many.

A celebration of Hertha’s life is planned for Friday, August 11 at 3:00 pm at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, 220 West Broadway, Maryville, TN. Interment of the urn at Magnolia Cemetery will follow the gathering.
