Alice Smith Trundle

Alice Smith Trundle, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Nashville’s Health Center at Richland Place from causes incident to age. She was born January 11, 1914 on the family farm in Monroe/Loudon Counties that is now partly Rarity Bay and Tellico Lake. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. James Garland (Maude McCollum) Smith. Alice graduated from Loudon High School in 1932 and moved to Maryville with her family during the Great Depression. She worked at Bell Telephone Company before marrying W. Scott Trundle on April 24, 1937. He worked for 41 years at ALCOA and was a member of the Blount County Quarterly Court before dying in 1965. After her husband’s death, she worked at Proffitts in the retail buyer department until retiring at age 70. Alice was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church. For over six decades she maintained close friendships with nine other Blount County women including Frances Allen, Margaret Grubbs, Mary Clark and Virginia Broyles through a monthly bridge club. Frances Everett, of Maryville, has been a faithful friend since the families were stationed in Chicago by ALCOA during World War II. Alice Trundle loved to cook and sew. In later years she wrote poetry. Most of all, she loved children. She is survived by her children, Scott Trundle (Liz) of Ogden, Utah, Ginger Manley (John) of Nashville; and siblings, Helen Crownover of Tampa, Charles Smith (Frances) of Lawrenceville, GA and Katherine Maloney (W.A.) of Telford, TN. Her younger brother, James G. Smith, V, died in Kaneoh, HI on May 23 of this year. She had four grandchildren, Elizabeth Manley DeWerth (Scot), Steve Trundle (Kim), Jon Manley and Allison Trundle Strachan (Scott); and five great grandchildren, Grant Manley, Alexander and Brendan DeWerth, and Claire and Scottie Trundle. A private interment will be held at Grandview Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at New Providence Presbyterian Church with Rev. Steve Musick officiating. The family will receive friends at the Church following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Providence Presbyterian Church, 703 W. Broadway, Maryville, TN. 37801.
