Betty Wiggins Powell

Betty Wiggins Powell, age 81 of Maryville, passed away Monday, July 18, 2011, at Shannondale of Maryville. Betty was born July 27, 1929, in Decatur, AL. When she was four years old, the family moved back to MS where her family roots were. Her hometown was Cleveland, MS, where she attended the public schools. She was the Salutatorian of her senior class in 1947. Betty graduated from Delta State University in 1950 in Public School Music. She did graduate studies at the University of Maryland, Peabody School of Music, and Catholic University. Betty had been a public school music teacher, a church choir director, and music director and had many students in piano and voice. She resided in MS, Knoxville, TN, Athens, GA, Millersville, MD and most recently in Shannondale of Maryville, TN. She married James Clatie Powell in 1948. She enjoyed making flower arrangements, reading, music, and being with family. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clatie Powell. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, James and Rosemary Powell of PA; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and William Gerolstein of MD; grandchildren, Paul Powell, Michael Powell, Christie Acri and Amanda Wilkinson; one great grandson, Elliot James Powell; brother, Robert E. Wiggins; sister, Anne Clair Dismuke. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rob Williamson and Rev. Dixie Lea Petrey officiating. Family and friends will re-assemble at 11:30 a.m. at the TN Veterans Cemetery, 5901 Lyons View Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919, for the interment service.
