Delphia Janeway West

September 22, 1924 — December 22, 2017

Delphia Ruth Janeway West completed her joyful, love-filled life on earth on December 22, 2017 at the age of 93. She was a resident of Shannondale of Maryville at the time of her death, and part of the Blount County community since childhood. During her life, she said goodbye to many of those whom she loved, including Dock West, her husband of 54 years, who died in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Dave and Rutha Janeway; brothers Oscar, Paul, and Ray Janeway; sister Arretta Janeway Crane, beloved sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and several cherished nieces and nephews. Those who survive to remember her with love include her son and his wife, Jim and Dayle West of Asheville, North Carolina; her son and his wife, Don West and Fran Fairchild of Dallas, along with their daughter and son-in-law, Meg and Jeroen De Waal of Los Angeles and their newborn son, Sam, born on January 4; her daughter and her husband, Nancy and David Long of Murfreesboro, along with their sons, Adam Long and his fiance, Julia Haigney of Brooklyn, New York, and Ben Long and his wife, Tracey Zielezinski of Chicago. Though they are spread across the country, she counted her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren among her finest blessings, and loved keeping up with their adventures. She is also survived by beloved nieces and nephews and their families, and many friends who have been an important part of her life, including her dear friend, Barbara Patterson. Delphia was born in Grainger County, moving to Blount County as a child when the Norris Dam was constructed, flooding the familys farm. She graduated from Lanier High School, worked as an electricians assistant at ALCOA during World War II, married her sweetheart when the war ended, then devoted her life to her family and community. A charter member of Springview Baptist Church, she was active as a teacher and mentor as long as her health permitted. She served as a volunteer with the Blount Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for 41 years, serving for almost ten thousand hours. She became one of the first residents of the Shannondale Community in 2001, moving from the home where her family resided. The family sends sincere thanks and love to each member of the staff of the Shannondale Health Care Center for their kind and professional care for her during the last two and a half years. A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 13 at 4 pm at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, preceded by visitation at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Springview Baptist Church Samaritan Fund which aids those in need or to the Blount Memorial Hospital Foundation for the Auxiliary Scholarship Fund.
