E. Newman Smith

SMITH, Col. Everett Newman, age 88 of Louisville, KY formerly of Maryville, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 9, 2002, in Louisville. He was born on August 4, 1914 in Maryville, TN and was a graduate of Maryville College. Mr. Newman joined the National Guard in the 191st Field Artillery, was activated during World War II and served under Patton in the 355th Field Artillery Battalion, part of the 76th Division. In both units he was the commander, rising to rank of Colonel in the regular Army. During his career, Newman became head of the ROTC unit at Eastern Kentucky University and was honored to have a Pershing Rifle Unit named for him. After retiring from the Army in 1968, he returned to Maryville, where he was employed by the Maryville School System as a Science Teacher at Maryville Middle School. He married Evangeline Walker in June, 1940 and they were married for 56 years. After his wife’s death in 1996, he moved to Louisville, where he lived until his death. Survivors include: sister, Barbara Spears; children, Evangeline Smith and Everett Newman Smith, Jr.; grandchildren, Lisa B. Kiser, Keith C. Smith, Rene’ S. Workman and James N. Smith; 6 great grandchildren and many cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Martha Sterne officiating. The interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery with full military honors provided by the 101st Airborne Division from Ft. Campbell, KY. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Friday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, Maryville.
