Harry H. Harter

March 19, 1916 — August 8, 2004

Dr. Harry H. Harter, age 87 of Maryville, and native of San Jose, California, passed away Sunday, August 8th, 2004 at Asbury Acres Health Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence E. Harter. Parents, Harry H. and Clara B. Casleo Harter. Dr. Harter was a professor at Maryville College from 1947-1981 and Professor of Music and Chairman of the Department of Fine Arts from 1964-1981. He received his B.A. from San Jose State College, San Jose, California; Masters of Music from Nebraska University, Lincoln, Nebraska, and S.M.D from Union Theological Seminary, School of Sacred Music, N.Y.C. Dr Harter had 25 choral pieces published by Mills Music, Belwin, Inc., Shawnee Press, Inc. He was appointed Director of Meritus of the Appalachian Ballet, commissioned by the Tennessee Arts Commission and the National Endowment of the Arts in 1976 for Fantasia on Shape Note and performed at Maryville College in May in celebration of The US Bicentennial. He was member of the Knoxville Chapter of the AGO in the 1960's-1970's and served as Dean for two terms in 1963-1965. In 1998 Maryville College bestowed the Distinguished Medal of Honor to Dr. Harry H. Harter. Dr. Harter served as choir director for many years at New Providence Presbyterian Church, Maryville. A memorial service will be 4:00 PM Sunday, August 14, 2004 at St Andrews Episcopal Church with Rev. Martha Sterne officiating. A private interment will be held at Maryville College Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Willard House on Maryville College Campus following the memorial service at St. Andrews. Anyone who sang in the college choir is invited to St. Andrews Episcopal Church 7:30 Thursday, August 12, 2004 for rehearsal. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Maryville College Choir Fund, 502 E. Lamar Alexander Pkwy, Maryville, TN 37803 or to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 314 W.
