John A. Kerr

July 25, 1918 — March 21, 2005

John A. Kerr, Sr., age 86, of Maryville, passed away Monday, March 21, 2005, at home with his family attending. Born in Greenback on July 25, 1918, he graduated from Greenback High School and Maryville College. He served in the United States Army during World War II and for years remained active in the Army Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. For over forty years he worked professionally in the production planning department of the Aluminum Company of America in Alcoa, TN and Pittsburgh, PA. Additionally, he has run the Anderson family farm in Rockford which has been in continuous operation since 1873. Other interests over the years include gardening, horseback riding, travel, and sports, especially baseball and basketball – in particular the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Lady Vols. Always active in his community, he has served in the Maryville Kiwanis Club, having had perfect attendance for over forty years, Habitat for Humanity, Contact Teleministry, United Way, and the Maryville City School Board, both as a member and chairman. Raised in the Greenback Presbyterian Church, where his grandfather, David Kerr, served as minister, he has been a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church for over sixty years, during which time he served as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and member of the Men’s Group, as well as other committees. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Helen Anderson Kerr; children John A. Kerr, Jr. and wife Pat of Rockford, Linda J. Kerr of Friendsville, and Barbara A. Kerr of Mathews, VA; grandchildren Andy and Erin Kerr; sister Lillian Kerr Beals and niece Karen Beals Ogle, both of Knoxville; sister-in-law Carolyn Anderson Carter, nephews Rick and Bob Carter, and niece Anne Carter. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm Wednesday, March 23rd, at New Providence Presbyterian Church with receiving of friends directly afterward in Westminster Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Providence Presbyterian Church Foundation, the H. F. (Bert) and Nellie Pickens Anderson Scholarship at Maryville College, The Heifer Project, or your favorite charity.
