Lois Witt Munger

May 7, 1925 — December 11, 2010

MUNGER, LOIS WITT -- age 85, of Oliver Springs, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, Dec. 11, at Summit View of Farragut nursing home. She was born in Surgoinsville, Tennessee, but grew up in Southeast Kentucky -- one of seven children of Austin and Marie Witt. She met and married her husband, Dr. Frank Munger, in Oak Ridge during the World War II Manhattan Project, and they later settled in Maryville, where he practiced dentistry and oral surgery and she served as his receptionist and assistant. Mrs. Munger was preceded in death by her husband; a son, James Austin “Chip” Munger, and several siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Marcella Herrin of Oliver Springs; son, Frank Munger of Knoxville; brother, Tom Witt of Oliver Springs; grandson, Rick Herrin of Knoxville; grand-daughter, Nancy Gehrts of Oliver Springs; three great-grandsons, D.J., Sam and Nick Gehrts; and a special niece, Susan Cross of Oliver Springs. Mrs. Munger was small in size but mighty in spirit and loaded with charm. She was a fan of all sports, but particularly the Vols and Lady Vols, the Atlanta Braves, and the Chicago Bulls during the Michael Jordan years. She loved lobster, chili dogs, and trips to Neyland Stadium. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star throughout her adult life, holding leadership positions -- including Worthy Matron -- at the Mary Blount Chapter in Maryville, and in 1966 she served as Grand Ruth in the state organization, traveling to virtually every county in Tennessee for meetings and special events. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Maryville. A family interment service will be held Wednesday, followed by a 1 p.m. memorial service in the Chapel at Sherwood Chapel and Memorial Gardens, Alcoa Highway, with Chaplain Mike Beach presiding. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in her honor to the Activities Fund at Summit View of Farragut. Contributions can be sent to Summit View, 12823 Kingston Pike, Farragut, Tn. 37934. McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home of Maryville is in charge of arrangements. A guest book is available at www.mccammonammonsclick.com
