Marcella Cranford

December 4, 1943 — January 23, 2023

Marcella Cranford, age 79, passed away at LifeCare Center of Blount County on January 23, 2023, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by friends and loving caretakers. Preceded in death by her parents, Pedro and Cecelia Garcia, survived by her favorite cousin, David Garrett. Marcella was born and raised in the Nashville area, graduated from Goodlettsville High School and Vanderbilt University before moving to Knoxville to attain her doctor of veterinary medicine degree at University of Tennessee DVM class of 1982. While still a vet student Marcella was struck by multiple sclerosis, which unfortunately kept her from establishing a veterinary practice but could not prevent her from becoming an effective advocate for wildlife and environmental awareness throughout her life. For many years she presented countless educational programs for school kids and adults, often featuring her pet wolves, birds of prey and other fascinating critters. Many kids who attended her shows remember her as the charismatic “wolf lady” and she also received official recognition from the state governor honoring her achievements overcoming obstacles of disability. Though physically limited in her final years, her friendly cheerful personality endeared her to friends and staff at LifeCare Center who provided loving care for her throughout her stay. Marcella did not wish for a formal funeral service, and requested any memorial donations be directed to Foothills Land Conservancy, Appalachian Bear Rescue or Young-Williams Animal Center.
