Nora Erna Schimelpfenig Phelps

Nora Erna Schimelpfenig Phelps, died March 16, 2009 in Maryville. She was born in Young America, MN on December 28, 1916 and was preceded in death by her mother, Emma; father, William; and three brothers, Marvin, Elford, and Kalmer. Graduated from Chaska, Minnesota High School, 1934 - Minnesota State Declamation Competition champion in Minneapolis and second in National Forensic League in Topeka, KS. She received an R.N. degree from Minnesota State, Neurosurgical nurse at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN and Seaside Hospital, Long Beach, CA. Raised family and lived for thirty-four years in Centerport, NY. She was an active member of the Centerport United Methodist Church, Federated Women’s Club of Long Island, NY and was active in Centerport Yacht Club in Centerport, NY. She leaves her husband, Richard G. (Dick) Phelps and five children, Nancy Liepa, Douglas and William Warner, David and Richard Phelps; 11 grandchildren; 9 nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. With her husband, Dick, she established retirement in Jamestown Village in Maryville, TN for 21 years. She became an active member of the Maryville First United Methodist Church, member of the United Methodist Women, on the Executive Board for four years, Circle President, member and teacher of the Garst Bible Class, and Chilhowee Club ESO member, and was an avid bridge player. Following cremation, burial will be in Carpenters Campground United Methodist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Maryville First United Methodist Church at a later date.
