Ruth Russell Bennett

BENNETT, Ruth Russell, 87, born November 16, 1919, in Louisville, TN died November 26, 2006, at Shannondale of Maryville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James W. Bennett, Jr., longtime University of Tennessee faculty member and department head. Ruth was a “Fifty Year Member” of New Providence Presbyterian Church and, after her husband’s death, she worked approximately eight years on the church office staff. A graduate of Blount County’s Mt. Vernon School, Vonore High (Monroe County), and Knoxville Business College, Ruth was a secretary in the business offices of ALCOA during World War II. Memberships included Chilhowee Club and UT Women’s Faculty Club. Other deceased family members included a son, Keith Russell Bennett; parents, Floyd Gillespie Russell and Margaret Gamble Russell; and sisters, Lois and Elizabeth Russell. Survivors include another son, James W. Bennett, III; daughters-in-law, Patricia Haley Bennett and Sharon Davenport Bennett all of Maryville; grandchildren, James W. Bennett, IV, and Andrea Haley Bennett, both of Boca Raton, FL, and Amber Bennett Wetherington, and Sarah Leann Bennett, both of Knoxville; sisters, Mary Russell Kidd, Vonore, TN, and Margaret Russell Miller, Seven Lakes, NC. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. November 29, at the graveside, Grandview Cemetery, Maryville, with the Rev. Steve Musick presiding.
