Stuart Percy ''Stu'' Mcniell Jr.

Stuart Percy Stu McNiell, Jr. of Maryville died July 12 at the age of 86. Born in Townsend to Stuart McNiell and Stella Myers, he was preceded in death by parents and brother Joseph McNiell. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sarah Brown McNiell; by son Stuart P. McNiell, III (Anna) of Nashville and daughter Helen McNiell (Antonio Alcala) of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren Stuart and John McNiell, and Paloma and Maya Alcala; by sisters, Barbara Handley and Shirley Heatherly of Maryville; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Stu served in the US Navy during World War II. He graduated Maryville College in 1950 and received an M.S. degree in Educational Administration from the University of Tennessee in 1957. He enjoyed a 40-year career in education - teaching at Townsend High School, serving as principal at Union and Rockford Schools, and as Supervisor of Instruction for Maryville City Schools. He retired in 1990. Stu was a seasonal ranger in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the late 1950s and early 1960s. An active member and Deacon at New Providence Presbyterian Church, he also served as a board member of Blount County United Way, Blount County Vocational Training Center, Blount County Education Association, Maryville College Alumni Association, and Friends of the Blount County Library. He was an officer of Kiwanis Club of Alcoa and a member for more than 50 years. He belonged to Knoxville Philatelic Society and Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A memorial service will be held at New Providence Presbyterian Church, Maryville, at 3 pm on Monday July 16. Receiving of friends follows the service. Memorial contributions can be made to New Providence Presbyterian Church, Maryville College, or Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
