The Rev. Gerald Hart Mcfarland

THE REV. GERALD HART MCFARLAND, 80, of 918 Wilder Chapel Lane, Asbury Place, Maryville, TN, passed away June 21, 2012 at St. Mary's Transitional Care in Knoxville, TN. He was born July 11, 1931, in Andover, VA, to the Rev. Lawrence W. and Hattie Kate (Hart) McFarland. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Cecil E. McFarland of Richmond, VA. He is survived by his wife, Martha Helen (Clayman) McFarland; sons, W. Lawrence (Larry) McFarland of Swanzey, NH, and Paul F. McFarland and wife Karen of Timberlake, NC; two grandsons, Eric S. McFarland and wife Cindy of King, NC, and Jason A. McFarland of Raleigh, NC; one great granddaughter, Aleigha Claire McFarland of King, NC. Surviving also are two brothers, Horace E. McFarland and wife, Anita, of Sebring, FL, and Robert F. Looney and wife, Gina, of Elizabethton, TN, and sister-in-law, Mary Riddle McFarland of Richmond, VA, and several nephews and a niece. Rev. McFarland was a member of Holston Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and had served churches in Virginia and Tennessee for 40 years before retirement. For ten years after retirement he was Minister of Visitation at Second United Methodist Church in Knoxville. He was a graduate of Grundy, VA High School, Tennessee Wesleyan College, Emory & Henry College, and Candler School of Theology, Emory University, GA. Memorial Service will be at Broadway United Methodist Church, Maryville, TN at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 29, with the Rev. Charles Maynard and the Rev. Eugene Lovell officiating. Reception and visitation will follow at 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the W. R. Allen Fellowship Hall. Internment will be at 3:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Kingsport, TN, with the Rev. Kim Goddard officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nellie V. Hart Scholarship Fund at Hiwassee College, Madisonville, TN.
