Christine S. Coatney, 98, was named appropriately for the day on which she was born, December 25, 1925, to James and Maude Spurgeon of Rockford, TN. She graduated from Everett High and then proceeded to head West and attended Long Beach College in California, while living with an aunt. She later returned to Blount County and ultimately began a full-time career in teaching mostly as a guidance counselor at Tyson Jr. High and West in Knoxville. She often reminisced fondly about those days.
Christine, of course, loved her family. But she also loved her books, music, and was particularly keen on memorizing poems. She even had memorized the words to the pledge of the Tennessee state flag. She had a remarkable mind, and her wit was delightful. She loved all things British and especially her beloved Beatles, with Paul being her favorite. She attended his concert in Knoxville at age 96.
Christine was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Charles F. Coatney, and her daughter, Carolyn Coatney.
She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Nyein-Rhodes (Tim) of Alcoa and grandchildren, Christie Brady (David), Julie Goldstein (Michael), and Zack Nyein (Michael Waterson); Christine had four great-grandchildren Katherine Brady (Miranda), Darby Bruhn (Draven), Sydney Alexander, and Whitley Goldstein. She had one great-great-grandchild, Willow Bruhn. Tia Baron was a most loyal and faithful caregiver thus helping Christine to predominantly remain independent at home.
The funeral will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 9, 2024, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Maryville with the Rev. Zack Nyein (Christine’s grandson) officiating. A reception will follow in the Great Hall. The interment will be 2:00 PM, Saturday at Clark’s Grove Cemetery.
