Donald (Don) Gene Burchfield of Maryville, age 95, entered into the presence of the Lord on June 1, 2026. Donald was born in Monroe County on January 23, 1931. He was one of eight children born to Aaron Sr and Nell Burchfield.
Don is survived by his daughter, Donnita Jeter (Skip), granddaughter, Brandi Rayburn (Chad), Great-grandchildren, Madison and Cole; Brothers, Pete, Sonny (Linda) and Rick; Brother-in-law, Bill Burkett, many nieces and nephews and countless friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Don was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Mildred; parents Aaron and Nell Burchfield; Brothers Hubert, Glenn, Roy and Aaron Jr (Frog).
A proud Veteran, Don served his country in the United States Army. He served during the Korean war and was assigned to the Mortar Unit on the front line. He often told people that he was thankful that he returned home “without 1 scratch”. His sense of duty and courage were evident not only in his military service but also in his professional life.
Don worked for over 40 years as a truck driver for Power Equipment Company hauling heavy equipment. It didn’t take long before Don missed driving after he retired, so he began to drive for C & D Charters Bus Line. He enjoyed the opportunity to drive again as well as meeting new people.
If you knew Don, you knew that he had several topics that he loved to talk about; God, trucks, music and Korea. However, his favorite was God and church. He always looked for an opportunity to talk about his faith. He wasn’t shy about asking people if they were a Christian and if they were ready to meet God.
Don attended Maryville Baptist Tabernacle for many years until he moved to Florida with his daughter. While in Florida, he attended the Pentecostals of Apopka where he formed lasting friendships and was loved by many.
Don's musical talents were a gift to all, as he played his guitar and banjo, delighting in the sounds of bluegrass and southern gospel music. He loved to play his guitar in church and also to visit local nursing homes where his music and singing brought joy and comfort to many. His warmth, kindness, and generosity of spirit were the hallmarks of a life well-lived.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Greg McKinney, a dear friend who watched over Don's home during his time in Florida, and to Greg’s grandson Judd Rayburn for maintaining Don's yard. Your kindness and care meant the world to Don and his family.
As we say goodbye to Don, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, music, and faith. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed.
