Galen Walter Johnson, Jr., age 83, passed away Friday, August 3rd, 2012. Galen was born October 7, 1928, in Avery County, North Carolina. He was a 1946 graduate of Everett High School, received his Bachelors Degree from Maryville College and his Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee. He taught and coached in Richards, Mo. and Porter High School in Maryville where the gymnasium is named in his honor. He was a long-time principal at Porter High School and later at William Blount High School. After his retirement, he was an assistant girls basketball coach at Maryville College. He is in the TSSAA and Blount County Sports Halls of Fame, the Daily Times Wall of Fame and has received various other recognitions. Preceded in death by parents Galen and Hazel Johnson and sister, Lila Myers. Survivors include loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Betty Pierce Johnson; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Mike Brewington; Stephanie and Jerry Thompson; Gaye and Mark Hasty; Dawn and Tony Reagan; Grandchildren and great grandchildren; Lance, Laura and Brantley Grooms; Nick, Heather, Dawson and Taylor Grooms; Mark, Jr., Tabitha, Bailey and Payton Hasty; Marissa, Allen and Troy Lambert; Mindy Reagan; Brothers and sisters in law, Jack and Elaine Johnson and David and Janet Johnson; Sisters and brothers in law, Doris Crowder, Sandy and David Coster and Sylvia Webb; many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 6th from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. with Rev. Barry Clanton and Rev. Harold Ray officiating. The interment will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Mountain View Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Galen Johnson Scholarship Fund at Maryville Municipal Credit Union, 321 W. Broadway Ave.; Maryville, TN 37803. The scholarship will be awarded to a Blount County student pursuing a degree in education at Maryville College.
