John Paul Matthews, age 92, of Alcoa, Tennessee, passed away peacefully in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on July 1, 2026, with his loving family by his side.
John was born in Goodwater, Alabama, to William Matthews and Hester Browning. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years before beginning a long career as an Electronics Technician with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
John had a lifelong passion for electronics, enjoyed tinkering with cars, and had a deep appreciation for automobiles and airplanes. He loved spending time with his family and especially treasured every moment with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether he was telling jokes, teasing them with his playful sense of humor, or making them laugh, those moments became cherished memories they will carry with them forever. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, quiet strength, and gentle spirit. He was a faithful member of Smokey View Baptist Church.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Clara Ellis Matthews, who passed away on August 4, 2011.
He is survived by his son, John D. Matthews and partner, Darcy Lewis; his daughter, Sissy Matthews-Felice and husband, Steve Felice; his grandchildren, Alex Felice and wife, Kayla Felice, Zach Felice, Elena Matthews and partner, Thurna Lewis, and Anoah Matthews and partner, Atlanta Williams; his cherished great-grandchildren, Chanler Felice and Rosalie Felice; his sisters, Sylvia Ann Jones and Nita Strickland; his brother-in-law, Ken Torgerson; his sister-in-law, Dot Matthews; and many extended family members and dear friends.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home in Maryville, Tennessee. A graveside service will follow from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Grandview Cemetery Pavilion.
John's greatest joy was his family, and his legacy of kindness, integrity, service, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 25, 2026 • 1:00–2:00 p.m.at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home 220 W. Broadway Avenue Maryville, TN 37801. The service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Grandview Pavilion.
