Luther “Edward” Gibbs, age 82, of Louisville, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at UT Hospital.
Edward was the seventh of seven children born to the late Dory and Alice Key Gibbs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Alice Houston, Dorothy Reagan, Katheryn Holloway, Willie Caldwell, Ann Russell, and Linda Byrd.
Ed was a member of Hillview Baptist Church, where he served as choir director for more than 30 years. He was a Baptist deacon for 53 years, serving 13 years at Trinity Baptist Church and 40 years at Hillview Baptist Church. He was employed as a shipping clerk at Maryville Furniture Company for 18 years and later retired from Wyko Tire Technology after 20 years of service.
Ed was known for his wit and patience and was an avid fisherman. His longtime fishing buddy, Tim Lockhart, affectionately referred to him as “the Fish Whisperer.”
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Kathyrene Bailey Gibbs; son, Tommy (Glenda) Gibbs of Morristown; daughter, Susan (Neal) Porter; grandchildren, Hailey Gaut, Chance (Taylor) Porter, and Collin Porter (Haley Shuler); great-grandchildren, Leighton Gaut, Ava Whitt, Camille Whitt, and MJ Whitt; a host of nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Wanda Jedlicka.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 4, 2026, from 12:00 until 1:30 p.m. at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, with the funeral service to follow. Burial will be at Zion Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. A meal will be served by the benevolence committee at Hillview Baptist Church fellowship hall following the burial.
