Mary Gene Roberts, 99, of Maryville, left her family and friends April 1st for a life in her new home in heaven. She was born in Wears Valley August 15, 1926 to Mel and Ethel Lawson. She graduated from Sevier County High in 1944 and four years later earned her bachelors degree in dietetics from Maryville College. She accomplished post graduate studies that enabled her to become a registered dietitian in the state of Tennessee. She worked at Blount Memorial Hospital beginning in the late 1940s before leaving her profession to devote time to supporting her children’s activities and education.
Mary Gene was full of life and energy. She was a life long learner loving to explore new things. She was an avid traveler, golfer, and bridge player. She was a top shelf hostess and a friend to all who knew her.
She was the best mom, mother in law, and grandmother anyone could ask for. She loved her family fiercely and was proud of each and every one of them. Second only to Jesus and her family was her love for Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Over the years she served in more capacities than there’s room to articulate. She gave 100% of herself to everything in which she committed. If you were in need...she was there with a casserole and an encouraging word! The people of Pleasant Grove were dear to her.
She was proceeded in death by her husband Charles W. Roberts and son Kent S Roberts (Waynesville, NC);her parents; her brother Earl; sister in law Trula. She is survived her daughter Dawn Bailes (Rob)of Maryville; daughter in law Linda of Waynesville, NC; grandsons Andy Bailes; Sam Bailes both of Maryville; William Roberts (Christina); Wesley Roberts (Emily) ; great grand children Taylor Jean and Charlotte Ann “Charlie” all of Waynesville, NC; several beloved nieces and nephews; and special friend Sue Lawson.
The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of Morningview Companionship Neighborhood as well as the nurses and Doctors at Blount Memorial Hospital.
