Mary Jane Hackworth Rutherford

Mary Jane Hackworth Rutherford, age 72, of Alcoa, Tennessee, passed away on December 12, 2025. She was born on June 14, 1953.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, William L. Hackworth and Charlotte Handley Hackworth, and by her sisters, Judy Hackworth Wilson and Carolyn Hackworth Whitehead.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Sawyer (Chris); nephews Robert Walker (Denise), Greg Walker (Amy), Wayman Whitehead (LeeAnn), and Daniel Sawyer (Sarah); and her niece, Laura Sawyer Green (Alex). Mary shared a special bond with her many great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom brought her great joy.

Mary was employed for many years as a bookkeeper, a role that reflected her strong work ethic and attention to detail. Outside of work, she was a very talented cook and baker, generously sharing her skills with family and friends. An avid animal lover, Mary had many pets throughout her life and considered each one a cherished member of her family. Above all else, her favorite thing was spending time with her extended family, whom she loved deeply.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
