Ruth Corine Atchley passed peacefully on Sunday, May 31st, 2026. Ruth was born September 21,1937 in Blount County TN. Ruth graduated from Lanier High School in 1955. She met Otha Howard Atchley on a blind date and married him December 13,1957. Howard was deployed to Japan with the Air Force. Ruth stayed in TN and finished school and received her RN Diploma from E. Tennessee Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, Knoxville TN in 1958. When Howard returned to the United States, they moved to Biloxi Mississippi with their newly adopted dog Snooky. Howard remained in the Military and Ruth worked at the local hospital as an RN.
Upon honorable discharge from the Air Force, Howard and Corine moved to Alaska where he worked with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). They lived in Anchorage, Alaska for 38 years. They raised 4 sons in Alaska. Howard and Corine were actively involved in scouting. Corine was Den leader and Howard was the Scoutmaster for the troop for over 10 years. They both earned the Silver Beaver Award. The Silver Beaver Award is the highest distinguished service award a local council of Scouting America can bestow upon an adult volunteer. All the boys earned their eagle scout rank.
Howard and Corine retired and moved back to Maryville, Tennessee in 1998 building a house on Garland Road. They resided on Garland Road until Howard passed. Corine moved to Waters Place Drive in Maryville in 2017. Howard died September 20,2015. Corine moved to Waters Place Drive in 2017 to live near her sisters Ann and Katherine.
Survivors include children, Stephen (Linda) Atchley, Stanley (Dawn) Atchley, Stacey (Cshelle) Atchley; grandchildren, Andrew (Maha) Atchley, Cindy Atchley, Laura and Sarah Atchley, Vitoria (Kyle) Tetherow, Lilly (Dillon) Linderman, Silas, Lucas and Jonas Atchley;
great grandchildren, Leona and Camden Tetherow, Mae, Colter and Weslee Linderman, Isaiah Atchley; siblings, Anna Garland Swaney, Katherine Garland Mahan, and Paul (Sarah Ann) Garland; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents, Harve Isaac Garland and Inis Amburn Garland; in-laws, Otha Williams Atchley and Elva Worley Atchley; husband, Otha Howard Atchley; son, Stewart Douglas Atchley; brothers, Danie, Johnny, Virgil, Hoyt and Charles Ernest Garland; sisters Hazel Garland, Lola Hall, Josephine Painter, Eloise Dailey, Margie Edwards; sister-in-law Joyce Dunkel.
Visitation will be held June 6th, 2026, from 12:30-1:30 pm at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home 220 W Broadway, Maryville TN. Burial with graveside service will be at 2 pm at Williamson Chapel Cemetery 1331 Williamson Chapel Road, Maryville TN.
