Thomas Earl Blackwell, lovingly known as Tommy or MJ, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025, at UT Medical Center, surrounded by the family who adored him. He was 76 years old.
Born on December 27, 1948, to Madge and Robert Blackwell, Tommy was a proud native of Blount County and a graduate of Everett High School. He served his country with honor as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps from August 7, 1968, to June 19, 1974. His bravery earned him numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Service Medal, Rifle Marksman Badge, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
After his military service, Tommy dedicated his professional life to being an electrician—a career that reflected his hands-on spirit and practical wisdom. He was a man who could fix just about anything, and more than once, he made people laugh while doing it.
Tommy shared 53 beautiful years of marriage with the love of his life, Sharon Blackwell. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, hard work, and unwavering love. He was the proud father of Kimberly Blackwell and Allen Blackwell (wife Amy), and a deeply devoted Papaw to Brendan Flynn, Tristan Blackwell, Wayne Blackwell, Shai Blackwell, and Tyler Blackwell. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Rebecca Blackwell, his parents Madge and Robert, and siblings Nancy (Homer), Shirley (Short), and Bobby (Hazel). He is survived by his sisters Caroline (Ray) and Debbie (Joe), and many dear friends—including his buddy Walter.
Tommy had a passion for the outdoors—he loved camping, fishing, hunting, and telling the kind of jokes that left people shaking their heads and laughing at the same time. He could spark a conversation with anyone and was known to “aggravate just for the fun of it.” Whether he was offering you a helping hand or a hard time, his presence was always deeply felt and cherished.
His family and friends will especially remember him for his devotion to them, his fierce sense of humor, and that signature line that meant it was time to hit the road:“Sharon, you ready ?... I’m going to the truck.”
His heart held more love than most could imagine, his laughter lingered like a favorite song on the porch, and his spirit was truly one of a kind. He could be a real pain in the ass and loved to aggravate just for the fun of it — but that was part of their charm. Tommy will be missed in ways words could never fully capture.
